Bimpe! Mum called out as she half carried and dragged Michael to the front door. Bimpe! She screamed again still no reply. What was she to do? Her only son was dying and her daughter was too obsessed with her grieving to help. Tola could hear the loud music coming from her daughters room, so she knew it was useless to try and shout any more. She had to find a way to get Michael to a doctor and fast. Life had gotten so hard in six months than it had been her entire life
About 20 years ago, when Tola was just fresh out of the university and was still trying to find her feet in the overcrowded dream chasers city of Lagos, she met Chike a dashing young man full of so much joy that could radiate the entire universe.
They got talking and became best of friends and even got to serve in the same state (Kano state Nigeria ). It did not take long before their love grew and they were literally inseparable.
One day Tola left town to Lagos to go see her mum, on getting back, she left straight for Chikes house only to find it locked. She checked their favorite spot and even asked around but no body had seen him . And as there were no cell phones at that time there was no way to reach him. Tola was really confused and so many thoughts flooded her mind from the good, the bad, the in between ugly and bad in fact a hundred million thoughts as she walked back home.
She was halfway home with her face buried in her thoughts, when she heard a male voice screaming "Tola, Tola I have been looking all over for you , Chike is not well follow me now " came the voice of their mutual friend Aliyu as he stretched out his arm and grabbed her and they raced to the hospital . It was strange to see Chike lying down all weak and pale looking and couldn't even talk. That was when She found out that he was a sickle cell patient and he had just had crisis. Tola was devastated because he never told her and they were already planning to get married soon after national youth service .
Tola was so heart broken that she took a walk to the hospital garden sat there for hours and cried like her heart was gonna be taken from her while making up her mind to end things with Chike.
Now as she sat in the waiting room for her son to get better, she wished she had stood firm on the decision she took in the garden 18 years ago , maybe she would not have been in this horrible predicament where for the past 6 months she and Chike fought cancer with all they had yet it still took him and now her son was the next victim of another series of tests and surgeries
Oh Chike! She thought , "why did we let love be so stupid" now see our boy struggling everyday to at least see a bit of earth before leaving" as tears rolled down her face.
Maybe Tola would get better , maybe not, but what I have realized is that there is no STUPID in LOVE but rather we try to use love as an excuse for the dumb decisions we take. Never let sentiments control lifelong decisions because I promise you, you'd loose so much, you'd wish you had not done LOVE IS BLIND but rather gone to an ophthalmologist to prescribe you some see through love glasses ! Think every action through! And remember that true love is not selfish, it would rather LET GO than allow hurt run it's course. Even the good book says love is not selfish!
